Sustainability is an essential element that links a number of architectural themes; this is an intrinsic element which does not overshadow other aspects but integrates with and refines them. Mauricio Cardenas prefers referring to “consciousness” rather than “sustainability”, as a way of approaching the themes proposed and the different levels of intervention. In contemporary architecture, sustainability is too often evaluated in regard to energy conservation, through the use of technology. As a professional, Mauricio Cardenas does not want to delegate this great responsibility to technology alone. Taking into consideration his cultural heritage, he focuses on the use and experimenting of natural materials, first of all bamboo, suitably adapted to contemporary European context.
